Hey everyone! Welcome to my first blog tutorial! Today, I’ll be showing you how to create these really fun Diamond letters.
Even though gemstones can look challenging to create, I’ve broken down the process into a few simple steps which will help you to do this project perfect no matter your skill level! So let’s get started!
Here’s what you’ll need for to create these diamond letters:
Mixed Media or Watercolor Paper
Watercolors or water based markers, (If your using water based markers you’ll need at least 3 shades of the color your want to use)
Paint Brush or Water brush pen
Optional: Grey Marker, Black Fine Line Pen, White Pen
Step 1: Sketching the Letters
Use the pencil and ruler to lightly sketch the outline of your letter/word and to add the facets(sections) to the letters. Be sure to keep your sketch lines as light as possible but still visible enough to see them when it’s time to paint the letters. You can use this free reference guide for an idea on how draw the letters and add the facets, but also feel free to experiment until you get your letters how you want them.
Step 2: Mixing the Colors
Now it's time to mix the colors! The two colors I used were Sap Green and Crimson. Then I mixed them with water to create lighter tones and I mixed them with some Payne’s Grey to create darker tones. Here’s a look at all the tones I used and how I mixed them:
Step 3: Painting the Letters
Paint alternating sections of the letters, to allow each facet to dry and avoid the colors from bleeding into each other. Doing this will also create the crisp edges that makes the facets look more sharp. When painting the letters, in order to create realistic reflections, make sure where one facet is light, the one right next to it is a darker color and vice versa.
If a facet is too light or dark after they've dried, you can darken them by adding a second layer of color or lighten them by adding a layer of white on top of them.
Step 4: Now its time to add some details!
If you're familiar with my style, then you know I love to add splatters to my piece but you can add any details you like! You use dots, stars, splatters, shadows and highlight to add more character and dimension to the letters.
